Why Pray?

In addition to these times dedicated to prayer, we give a significant amount of time in our regular small groups and leadership meetings.  Why spend all this valuable time in prayer?  The answer is simply that we believe that God, while sovereign in all his actions, is pleased to work through our prayers.

"Whenever God is ready to do something with His people, He always sets them to praying."  That was the conclusion of J. Edwin Orr after studying the work of God in revival.  America's first great spiritual awakening in the 1740's illustrates the principle well.  The pastor-theologian Jonathan Edwards circulated a paper among his fellow pastors to encourage them to prayer.  Its title tells the whole story, "An Humble Attempt to Promote Explicit Agreement and Visible Union of God's People in Extraordinary Prayer of the Revival of Religion and the Advancement of Christ's Kingdom on Earth."

God rewarded their labors in prayer with a spiritual reformation that spread like wildfire throughout the American colonies.  Thousands were converted, and the face of American religious, social, and political life was radically altered for good.  We long to see God do a great work in our day within our families, our church, our nation, and our world.  We want to see the name of the LORD glorified throughout his creation; and to that end, we dedicate ourselves to prayer.

...praying at all times in the Spirit,

with all prayer and supplication.

To that end keep alert with all perseverance,

making supplication for all the saints...

Ephesians 6:18
